Cell-Site Analysis is a forensic technique, relating to the science of being able to establish the geographical location of a mobile phone when a call, SMS message or download is received or sent.

These services are generally used by law enforcement agencies and defence organisations, with the purpose of ensuring that a suspect was in the surrounding district of the crime scene or not at the time of the criminal activity.

The information generated from Cell-Site Analysis is typically used for evidential purposes and are supported in courts by expert witnesses. At Fusion Forensics we pride ourselves on our highly qualified and skilled individuals who act as expert witnesses.

Case Study (Prosecution)

Case Background

Fusion Forensics was instructed to conduct Cell Site Analysis to show which mobile telephones, attributed to certain suspects, were involved in a robbery at a Jewellers in London.

What Fusion did

Localised location measurement surveys were undertaken to identify the serving cells at locations of interest. From the survey data we were then able to identify in our one-line call schedule if any of the mobile telephones used serving cells at any of the locations surveyed.

Fusion then mapped the movement of the mobile telephones to demonstrate co-location, attribution in relation to known addresses and movement to and from the Jewellers.

A technical report was produced to support the mapping and provide commentary and conclusions.

Our findings

We were able to demonstrate movement of mobile telephones that was consistent with the involvement in the robbery.

Court Ready Evidence

Our Cell Site Analysis Expert produced court ready documentation that was able to be presented to the jury.

The Outcome

During the court proceedings our expert gave evidence which, after the conclusion of the case, led to all defendants being found guilty.

Case Study (Defence)

Case Background

Fusion Forensics was instructed to conduct Cell Site Analysis to show whether or not the solicitor’s client was at the location of a burglary.

What Fusion did

Fusion reviewed the strength of the prosecution material, undertook location measurement, cell coverage surveys and analysed the results of the surveys against the Call Data Records for any activity during the period of interest in comparison to the surveyed locations of interest and known
subjects’ addresses.

Our findings

Fusion was able to demonstrate that the client’s alibi was equally as feasible as the prosecution assertions and therefore helped to provide reasonable doubt.

Court Ready Evidence

Our Cell Site Analysis Expert produced court ready documentation that included a Technical Report and Graphics Pack which was presented at court.

The Outcome

During the court proceedings our expert gave evidence which, after the conclusion of the case, led to a not guilty verdict.
